Carpet Mart's hardwood flooring FAQ

Once again it's time to clear up some common questions about a specific flooring material. Last time, we covered luxury vinyl flooring. This time, we're taking a look at hardwood flooring, and clearing up a few things about it.

Hardwood is often considered the supreme flooring material because it is durable, beautiful, and can even add to the resale value of a home. As popular as it is, however, many people still don't know much about it, and have a few questions. Well, we've got the answers! Here are a few common questions people have about hardwood flooring and the answers to them.

Is it hard to care for?

Hardwood flooring's reputation for being somewhat "fancy" has had the odd effect of making it seem a bit high-maintenance. In reality, it's not much different than most other hard-surface flooring materials in this regard. All you need to do is make sure it doesn't get wet, and if it does, make sure to clean it up quickly.

Beyond that, simply lifting furniture instead of dragging it, and frequent sweeping with an occasional pass from a damp mop, is all it takes to keep it looking great for years, even decades.

Are there limitations to where it can be installed?

Yes. All wood flooring, whether engineered or solid, is susceptible to moisture. This means it's not a great candidate for use in bathrooms, laundry rooms, basements, or any other room where moisture is a likely threat. If you still want the look of wood without the risk of water damage, faux wood luxury vinyl tile is an excellent alternative.

How many times can it be sanded and refinished?

One of the great things about hardwood flooring is the fact that you can sand it down and refinish it a number of times throughout its service life. This process restores the floors to like-new condition, and even offers you a chance to change up the color of the floors!

The number of times this can be done to any given hardwood floor is dependent mainly upon the thickness of the flooring in question. Generally, good hardwood flooring can be sanded up between six and ten times before it starts to wear out. The best way to be sure, is to consult with a professional refinishing service about your options, however. Better safe than sorry!
