Tile flooring is one of the oldest and most beautiful flooring installations out there. Tile has been in use since ancient times, and though little has changed in their manufacture, modern tile is more beautiful than ever. In fact, tile can be used in a number of crafting and art projects for this very reason. This got us thinking.
It's a flooring industry standard to purchase extra tile to account for broken tiles and cutting waste, to ensure there is enough for the job and some tile leftover for replacements. Well, sometimes you don't need all of that extra tile, and it can be a hassle to just keep it around, and an even bigger one to get rid of it. So we put our heads together and came up with some fun ways to up-cycle that old, useless tile into something beautiful. Here's what we came up with!
Dry Erase Fridge Magnets
This project is best suited for plain white tiles, but other light colors are viable with good dry erase markers. This is an easy project that just requires a bit of glue, some extra tiles, and the markers to write on them.
Simply glue a few magnets that are powerful enough to support the weight of a tile and let dry. Then, you can write messages or draw pictures on them with dry erase markers. They're like re-usable Post-it Notes!
House Numbers
This project is a fun way to get some unique, beautiful house numbers. All you need is a bit of extra tile, some paint brushes, paint, and a bit of imagination. You can download some stencils online or free-hand some designs and numbers. If you really want to kick it up a notch and you have the DIY chops for it, you can frame them in a stained wooden bracket for a store-bought look that is both elegant and unique.
Tile Coasters
This is another super-easy project that only requires a bit of paint, some brushes, and tile, of course! Simply paint pictures or beloved quotes on some tiles, and leave them strategically placed where people tend to leave those dreaded drink rings. It's a great way to up-cycle some tile,s and protect your wooden tables at the same time!
